A Retrospection for Piano Festival Seminar—the Profound Structured Development of Piano in China

July 3, 2014 afternoon, the first International Piano Art Seminar came about at Arts Performance Center, Xiamen University. A number of pianists and educators, Dean of college of arts, Xiamen University, Su Li, associate dean, Chen Shuhua and other twenty attendees from the Central Music College,the Shanghai Music College, and the China Music College, etc., joined the magnificent occasion.

At the beginning of the seminar, Dean Dr. Li addressed the importance of music and art, which could promote the development of art here in Xiamen University.
Given that, associate dean Mr. Chen also illustrated the meaning and the goals of this seminar and the drastic increased population of piano learners in the country, which led some problems as to having the quality and quantity of piano education simultaneously. Presented below are comments from these piano professionals:
1. Downsides of quick development of piano business: Prof. Zhu Xianjie in 1986 left Shanghai for Toronto three decades ago. Turbulent change occurred in piano performance and education. He was told by Li Yunqiang, " China uses 30 years to polish off the work required 100 years to be done by US in the piano development history," which brings some downsides of development of piano:(1) Too many students merely stress one chapter of sonata, leaving no interest on lento chapter. (2) Parents place too much press on their only child. (3) Students emphasize too much on performance skill, not quality of learning process.
2. Vital role played by teachers: those issues above, in fact, can be changed imperceptibly by teachers' assistance; therefore, no matter what type of music college you are in, music instructors and sustaining training are needed.
3. Sound training planning adoption, teaching materials renovation, and students fundamental training: currently, the teaching materials used by students are mostly belonging to 1960s, which can't suit the fast developed piano performance education. The contemporary music materials, needed by teachers, are a hard nut to crack here. Given that, popular movie and animation music materials can be added to trigger students' interest on learning piano.
4. Bring forth new music works to make China a great piano nation: when it comes to great piano countries, such as Russia, France, Portland, and so on, there are always some awesome piano works relevant to them. Emphasizing hard piano training and composition education can bring China a great piano country in the future.
