Venera Bojkova's Piano Concert at Xiamen University
Bulgarian pianist Verna Bojkova made a wildly anticipated appearance at the Science Arts Center of Xiamen University to a sold out crowd on July 4, 2014. Ms. Bojkova immigrated to Britain in 1993 and post a teaching position in New Castle University. Being a successful pianist and harpist, she is active in performance and recording across the world.
On the first half of the program, Bojkova gave a a nearly flawless account of works by Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt. Her interpretation on Beethoven seemed to be sentimental in comparison to her showy bravura gesture on Liszt's Petrarch Sonnet and refined control on Chopin's Scherzo, which yields a golden tone.
On the second half of the program, Ms. Bojkova dazzle the audiences with her buoyant and virtuoso playing on Schumann, Debussy and contemporary piece by Brown, who was born in 1954. Brown's An Pek's Favorite Nanyin is based on Chinese Nanyin tonality gives a sophisticated and mellow touch to the finale of the concert.
